Existing car-following models, primarily developed with data from countries with advanced road infrastructure, often fail to accurately represent traffic behavior in developing nations.
Research indicates that regions like Panama exhibit distinct driving patterns, including more aggressive behavior, a lack of lane discipline, and a more heterogeneous traffic composition.
This project seeks to bridge this critical gap by developing Panama's first car-following model. It will integrate both data-driven methodologies and established physics-based principles. The core of the project involves collecting and analyzing local traffic data to create precise, context-specific models, which will then be validated under real-world conditions.
This work is essential for improving traffic analysis, optimizing transportation systems, and enabling the development of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) that are truly adapted to Panamanian roads.
Furthermore, the project's findings will significantly contribute to the understanding of driving behavior in similar under-researched contexts, providing a robust foundation for future mobility studies and strategic road planning.
