Panama April 15, 2024. In an effort to strengthen new information and communication technologies through collaboration, the National Institute for Advanced Scientific Research in Information and Communication Technologies (INDICATIC AIP) attended the IV Jornadas STIC & RootedCON Congress Panama Chapter: governing and sharing the keys to success in cybersecurity, held at the Amador Convention Center, Panama City from April 10 to 12, 2024.
In an increasingly interconnected world, cybersecurity has become a vitally important issue for the world. With the rapid advancement of new technologies and the growing dependence on digital platforms, protecting data is essential to safeguard stability and economic development. That is why, with a view to strengthening cybersecurity issues, Panama hosted the STICPANAMA conference, which included three modules: international module, cooperation module and institutional module.
For INDICATIC AIP, the vulnerability of IT systems entails implementing a culture of cybersecurity that protects against fraud, prevents and reduces cyber-attacks, and keeps personal data safe.
“At INDICATIC AIP we see enormous possibilities for strengthening cybersecurity in Panama. We are determined to promote new initiatives and to collaborate in research that will boost our digital security.”, said Sara Solis, R&D project engineer at INDICATIC AIP.
The IV Jornadas STIC & Congreso RootedCON Chapter Panama was organized by the National Cryptologic Center (CCN), attached to the National Intelligence Center, the Joint Command of Cyberspace (MCCE), RootedCON, INCIBE and the National Authority for Government Innovation (AIG) of Panama, the meeting was also supported by the Organization of American States (OAS), CSIRTAmericas Network and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), as well as the Panama Canal Authority and the World Bank.
The IV STIC Conference & RootedCON Congress Panama Chapter reached an average of 650 daily attendees and 1,000 online attendees from 31 countries. In addition, the event featured more than 80 speakers from 15 different countries who presented a program of 52 conferences, 5 expert panels, 8 practical workshops, and different multilateral meetings.
Cybersecurity data:
- According to Verizon's 2023 report, human error accounts for 74% of security breaches. While phishing attacks is the most common cyber attack, with approximately 3.4 billion unwanted emails per day. These attacks are responsible for 90% of data breaches.
- For its part, Microsoft estimates that by 2025 there will be 3.5 million vacancies in cybersecurity.
- The 2022 consulting firm PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers) estimated that Panama would need around 10,000 cybersecurity professionals to meet the demand. Currently according to the 2020 census of the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC), Panama has 3,000 professionals in the field.
